I Want a Garden

PhotobucketSo in between being a wife and mother, a counselor and a professor, an ‘unschooling’ mom and wanna be photographer….

I am thinking of adding ‘master gardener’ to the mix.

Have I completely lost my mind?????

Maybe not, ’cause here is what I was thinking….you can’t think if you have lost your mind, right? RIGHT?????

When we first moved into our home we needed to do a lot of work to the outside. While this was a work in progress I brightened the dismal view by having a ‘container’ garden on my front porch (porch swing included). However, as the front of our home began to transform itself into a ‘classic’ home, I decided I wanted a much cleaner look for the front porch. I did a ‘clean sweep’ of our country front porch and replaced it with the clean lines of ‘classic’ outdoor table and chair with a lone geranium on the table.

As spring approaches the ‘gardening’ bug has bitten me where I have no common sense. I have always wanted a garden right outside the 3/4 length windows I look out of when I am in my office. Yet when I look through garden magazines I get overwhelmed at the ‘planning’ stages. I don’t plan much in my life. I honestly get too overwhelmed in the process.

So my hairdresser gave me an idea on Monday while we chatted away the time it took for my color to ’set’ (I always take time to get my hair done…always…I gain so much insight while letting someone else worry about how I look).

She said….just lay down a walkway to your most favorite corner of your yard and start your garden on either side…one stepping stone at a time. Then when you get to your ‘corner’ you will more than likely have a ‘vision’ and it will all fall into place….like it fell willy nilly out of the sky.

After filling all my other obligations today (you really do not want to peek at my appointment book…it will frighten you)…I am going to search out some awesome stepping stones and begin that garden….and I do believe this would be a good learning experience for both the unschooling mom and the unschooling child. Don’t you???

Not to mention excellent therapy for a woman skating on the edge.

I’m not a gardener, I play in the dirt and my gardens never turn out looking well kept they look wild and fancy free, at least that’s what I tell myself. This sounds like a wonderful idea and great therapy!

Gardening is awesome therapy. I love nothing more than getting my hands in the dirt. My gardening was planned for me last year when we bought an above ground pool that we eventually ended up selling. We were left with a giant bare dirt circle in the yard that I started filling in with herbs. My goal this year is to finish it.

Good luck! And thanks for your comment on my blog. It was kind of you. :)

Oh wow–that is such an awesome way to go about it! Wow!

I have tons of useless information on every subject under the sun except gardening and pets. Can’t do anything that doesn’t tell me specifically what it needs (except babies–I can do babies). We kind of did this over the last few years out front, my gave us old river rocks and I laid them then built a garden around them–all things that need no actual care because I am horrid at maintaining gardens.:)

I’d like a veggie garden but I’m too lazy to do anything about it!

I get the gardening bug about every five years or so, and I always lose my enthusiasm for it, and things get overgrown with weeds or die from lack of water. :-P

That walkway idea is getting me interested again. It has been about 5 years. Sigh.

I really like this idea and it would work well in my yard too… I think I’ll borrow it.

Absolutely, do this! You love nature and I think a mother-daughter project of creating something alive and lovely will be a marvelous experience to share. And then you have also something wonderful to look at! It’s very relaxing and theraputic!

I use to have about 3 dozen orchids of all varieties, ancient oak trees, Pygmy Palms and Jasmine trees. Now I have 6 huge Pecan trees and a few Pansies, after losing my hydrangea to drought and frost (a double whammy!). I am dying to plant a raised bed garden! I’m keeping my eye out for the perfect container.

    Go for it!

Great idea! I’m thinking of doing a garden with my twins this year! I like the idea of the stepping stones. Maybe I’ll have the boys creat a stone or two. I definately do not have a green thumb but it would be a great project to do together as a family.

I don’t think you’re crazy, but I can’t decide if you’re intimidating or inspiring. I’m fortunate to stay out of bed long enough to blog and be a pastor (much less a husband and father).

Seriously, garden to your heart’s content. My daughters garden and absolutely love it.

A garden is a noble venture, indeed. I have been working on what I prefer to call my “walking garden” for about 5 years now. I hope by the time walking becomes difficult I can enjoy it from the back deck.
